Studies have shown that heating broccoli in a microwave has been found to remove 97% of flavonoids. Flavonoids are plant compounds that have anti-inflammatory benefits in broccoli. Essentially if you microwave broccoli, you can potentially lose a lot of nutritional benefits.

What’s interesting is that there was a 2019 research study that showed that shorter cooking times in a microwave such as one minute or less when it came to heating up broccoli didn’t affect the nutritional content of broccoli. It seems that the longer you heat up broccoli in a microwave, more than one minute the more you comprise the nutritional value based off studies.

What’s dangerous is heating plastic in a microwave. And if you expose this to heat the plastic additives can leak into the food making it harmful to your body and health.

A 2011 research study revealed that researchers purchased more than 400 plastic containers that were designed to contain food found that the majority leaked chemicals that disrupted hormones.

Electromagnetic waves from microwaves will not hurt you. We as human beings are exposed to it daily. If you bake anything in an oven you are exposed to the same electromagnetic waves and infrared energy that you would get from a microwave.

If you can eat food from sunlight, you shouldn’t be concerned with eating food from a microwave.

The Bottom Line it is safe to microwave food as long as you are not heating plastic. It can be dangerous to microwave food in a plastic container because the plastic additives can leak into the food making it unhealthy if you consume this.
