What is a salt water flush? It involves drinking a mixture of warm water and non-iodized salt and this has a laxative effect. It is effective in cleaning out the colon and improving bowel movements. But it is important to know that there isn’t any scientific evidence that a saltwater flush can detox the body or remove waste build up from your digestive tract.

Some of the side effects of drinking salt water on an empty stomach are nausea and vomiting. You can also experience cramping, bloating and dehydration. It can also increase your risk of sodium overload which can lead to high blood pressure.

Some of the extreme side effects to colon cleansing is an electrolyte imbalance which can lead to a rapid loss of sodium and fluids.

Some of those negative symptoms from colon cleansing can lead to the following:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Seizures
  • Blood pressure problems
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Weakness

You shouldn’t do a saltwater flush if you have the following health conditions:

  • Heart problems
  • Edema
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney problems
  • Gastrointestinal issues.

One of the best ways to detox your colon by supporting your body’s natural detoxifying organs which is your liver and kidney is the following:

  • Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily
  • Eat a balanced healthy diet.
  • Limit your smoking.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Exercise regularly
  • Manage healthy blood pressure.
  • Limit your alcohol intake.

Here is how you would do a salt water flush:

  • Dissolve two teaspoons of non iodized sea salt in quart of warm water. You can lemon juice to add extra flavor and taste.
  • Drink the mixture on an empty stomach as quickly as possible.
  • Most people do the salt water flush as soon as they wake up in the morning time. And the reason they do it in the morning time because at that time you have an empty stomach, and you haven’t eaten anything yet. And that is the best time to do it.

The Bottom Line is a salt water flush can cleanse your colon and increase your bowel movements. But it is important to make sure you don’t look at a salt water flush as some form of detox because there isn’t any scientific evidence that supports this.
