What is the 5/2 Diet? The 5/2 diet is a popular intermittent fasting that was made popular by a British Journalist Michael Mosley. How does it work? It works by eating 5 days a week as normal eating days while restricting the other two days to 500 to 600 calories per day.

It would be about 500 calories for women and 600 calories for men. And you can pick any two days of the week you prefer to do the fasting as long as there is a non-fasting day in between.

A lot of people think because you are doing some unique type of intermittent fasting you are going to lose weight quicker than traditional weight loss methods. If you are losing weight performing the 5/2 intermittent fasting diet it is because you are in a deficit.

There was a research study that showed that the 5/2 diet caused weight loss similar to the regular calorie restriction diets. Studies show that this type of diet was effective at reducing insulin levels as well as improving insulin sensitivity.

The reason the 5/2 diet could work when it comes to weight loss is because you are eating fewer calories. To lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume.

It is important to understand that there aren’t any significant weight loss advantages for intermittent fasting over conventional calorie restriction diets. Studies show that there isn’t any significant difference in regards to the weight loss between those two diets.

The people that should avoid intermittent fasting is:

  • People with eating disorders
  • People who have experienced blood sugar levels
  • Pregnant people, women they are breastfeeding, people that have Type 1 diabetes.
  • Women that have fertility issues
  • People that are malnourished and or nutrient deficient

The Bottom Line the 5/2 diet is a popular intermittent fasting diet designed to help people lose weight. The diet is about 5 days a week of routine eating days and then two days a week fasting.
