What are the symptoms of Iodine deficiency? Some of the visible symptoms are neck swelling and weight gain. The front swelling of the neck is when the thyroid gland is too big and that’s called goiter. The thyroid uses iodine to make thyroid hormones so when you’re low on iodine it won’t be able to make enough thyroid.

Weight Gain

One of the reasons why you gain weight when you are low in iodine is because your body won’t make enough thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones control the speed of your metabolism. When you have low thyroid hormones levels your body burns fewer calories at rest.

Fatigue

Being tired and weak is another common symptom of iodine deficiency. Research studies show that 80% of the people with low thyroid hormone levels feel tired and weak.

Hair Loss

Another symptom of iodine deficiency is hair loss. There was a study in 700 people that found that 30% of people that were low in thyroid hormones experienced hair loss.

Irregular Bleeding

Heavy and irregular bleeding during menstruation is a sign of iodine deficiency. A study showed that 68% of women with low thyroid hormone levels experienced irregular menstrual cycles compared to 12% of healthy women.

Recommended Daily Intake

The recommended daily intake of Iodine is 150 mcg per day and that meets about 95 to 97% of most adults’ healthy needs. Some of the best sources of iodine when it comes to foods are:

  • 1 Large Egg- 16% of the RDI
  • 1 cup of Yogurt- 50% of the RDI
  • 3 ounces of Cod- 66% of the RDI
  • 3 ounces of Shrimp- 23% of the RDI
  • 3 ounces of Tuna- 11% of the RDI
  • ¼ Teaspoon of Salt- 47% of the RDI

The Bottom Line is the signs and symptoms of Iodine deficiency is fatigue, weakness, weight gain, heavy and irregular bleeding, hair loss, etc.
