Why does glycogen matter for your health? Our body uses glucose to provide fuel for all the cells in the body. Our muscles, brain, lungs need glucose to function properly. And our brain needs glucose at the highest level to function the right way. Glucose comes from the digestion of carbohydrates and during digestion your body breaks down the chain of carbohydrates.

If your brain doesn’t get enough glucose, you will experience brain fog, mood changes and difficulty concentrating. And this is why it is important to consume enough carbohydrates in your diet, so this doesn’t happen.

After you eat carbs, it uses some of it right away and the extra glucose will refill the glycogen stores. Any extra glucose that is left will refill your glycogen stores and if there is still more glucose left your body may store it as fat.

Glycogen in your muscle cells helps provide energy to your muscle tissue and your muscles need a lot of fuel to help them activate and move during exercise.

Where is your glycogen stored?

Glycogen is stored mainly in the liver and in the skeletal muscles. So, three quarters of your glycogen is stored in your muscles. The amount of glycogen depends on the following factors:

  • How many carbohydrates do you eat?
  • How often do you exercise and the intensity level?
  • The time gap between meals
  • Your Liver Enzyme Function

One of the best ways to check how much glucose you have in your blood is through a glucose blood test. Or you can do it through a liver ultrasound test. But it is important to know that your levels change constantly based on how often you eat and exercise.

Glycogen serves a good backup energy reserve for the body. And if you lose fuel, it will cause major problems for your brain cells and cells activities. And so, your body keeps a backup supply and if your glucose drops then your liver converts glycogen back into glucose and releases it in your blood.

Glycogen is very important to be able to have the energy to be active and move and it is vital to the functionality of your brain.

The Bottom Line is glycogen is one of the important energy sources to function properly when you are active and exercising. It is also vital to your brain functionality. It helps to activate your muscles and keep you moving without energy problems.
