According to the CDC about 10% of males that are diagnosed with chlamydia. And about 5 to 30% of women who are diagnosed develop symptoms. So not everybody develops symptoms if they obtain the disease.

Some of the most common symptoms for males and females are:

  • Frequent urination
  • Fever
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

Some of the symptoms in males are:

  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Itching, swelling and tenderness of penis.
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Enlarged groin lymph nodes.

Some of the symptoms in females are:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Vaginal discharge

If chlamydia is untreated, you can potentially experience infection, fertility, pregnancy complications, chronic pain, etc. According to the CDC the following groups should be tested once a year for chlamydia:

  • People under the age of 25.
  • People over the age of 25 that have multiple sexual partners. Or a sexual partner that has an STI.

Testing for chlamydia can be done via a urine test or swab from the genitals. Chlamydia can easily be treated with antibiotics. But if you have it you should refrain from sex for a least a week until your symptoms are gone.

Some of the severe cases if you leave chlamydia untreated for 3 years can cause infertility and scar tissues that can block the fallopian tubes.

It is also important to know that if you are pregnant with chlamydia, you can potentially pass this to your baby during childbirth.

The Bottom Line is if you have chlamydia you want to get it treated immediately. If you leave it untreated it can cause a lot of health complications and as severe as infertility. Chlamydia can easily be treated with antibiotics.
