What is Mayo? Mayo is considered a condiment that is used in sandwiches and salad dishes such as pasta and potato salad.

The Nutrition contents of mayo are the following:

It has 90 calories and 10 grams of fat per tablespoon and 70 mg of sodium. Mayo is a high fat condiment made from egg yolks, vinegar, spices, and flavorings. One of the best ways to ensure that your mayo is dairy free is to look at the ingredient labels in the back of the bottle.

The FDA- (Federal Drug Administration) requires manufacturers to identify common food allergens on the label. The types of milk-based ingredients to see if contains dairy are milk, cheese, butter, casein, whey, etc.

A popular Portuguese mayo called milk mayonnaise is made with whole milk, lemon juice, spices, etc. This type of mayo is dairy because of its milk-based ingredients. There are also mayonnaise-based dressings like ranch or any type of creamy Italian that contain milk products. And there is also milk mayonnaise and eggless mayonnaise that contains dairy.

So, you must be mindful when you purchase any type of mayonnaise if might contain some form of dairy. And that is why it is so important to really examine the label on the back of the bottle to see if there is any sort of milk-based ingredient.

There are health benefits to consuming dairy products for some people that don’t care if the mayo they buy has a little dairy. One of these benefits is improved bone health. Dairy is considered the best source of calcium for the human body.

Some health organizations recommend you consume 2 to 3 servings of dairy per day to get enough calcium for their bones. Research has shown that dairy can improve bone density, reduce the risk of osteoporosis, and reduce risk of fractures in older adults.

The most important thing is to check to see if you are lactose intolerant as research studies have shown that about 65% of the world population cannot break down lactose.

The Bottom Line is most mayo doesn’t have any dairy but there are some that do so it is important to check the label ingredients in the back of the bottle to determine if it does.
