  • Take zinc supplements

School age kids are most susceptible to getting pink eye. The bacterial load from this can live on doorknob for a week. It is why you should always wash your hands, so you don’t spread the infection. Some of the best ways to prevent pink eye is washing your hands regularly, changing your pillowcases often, use clean towels daily, avoid sharing eye makeup with the next person.

The CDC recommends that if you have a child that has pink eye or infectious conjunctivitis that it is best for them to go home so they don’t infect anybody.

When you would see a doctor:

  • Is when you are under 5 years old.
  • Your vision is reduced and impaired.
  • The pus in your eye is either green or yellow.
  • Typically, if you have a pink eye and you have a bad infection you can be out of commission for about a week.
  • Once you get the right antibiotics from your doctor you should bounce back to normal within 5 to 7 days. The recovery time is pretty quick.

The four common causes of pink eye are viral, bacterial, allergic, and irritant. Viral means you have a cold in your eye, and you have a respiratory infection. Bacterial means you have an ear or strep infection. If you have a bacterial infection and you use eye drops to treat this, it can cut a few days off your recovery time. Another important thing is to make sure you don’t wear contact lenses if you have a pink eye as that will aggravate it and make it worse.

Some of the most common pink eye symptoms

  • are pink or red toned eyes,
  • a gritty feeling in your eyes,
  • itchiness in your eyes,
  • an abnormal number of tears, watery or thick discharge that builds your eyes at night.

Some of the common irritants that can cause you pink eye:

  • are chlorine in pools
  • air pollution
  • exposure to other chemicals.

Pink eye is very contagious and one of the ways it can spread is as simple as touching your eye. And then after that touching someone’s hand and then that person touching their own eye. That is how easy it can spread from person to person.

Pink eye can be diagnosed by:

  • a vision test
  • an external eye tissue examination.
  • or a conjunctival tissue smear.
  • Or lastly an examination of the inner eye.

The Bottom Line is pink eye is a very common infection that can spread pretty quickly.  But it can be treated with antibiotics and the recovery time is about 7 to 10 days. If you have a child that has pink eye, and they are at sick it is best for them to go home and get treated with antibiotics until the pink eye goes away. And the reason because of how fast it can spread among children.
