How to lower your fever? First is to drink lots of water and stay in bed and get some rest. Second is taking over-the-counter medications to help reduce the fever. Third is drinking lots of water to keep yourself fully hydrated. Fourth is minimizing contact with others so you don’t spread your fever.

Most fevers can go away within a week or so and sometimes they can be longer depending on their severity. This is the temperature range for fevers for adults:

  • Low Fever- 99.1 to 100.4 Fahrenheit
  • Moderate Fever-100.6 to 102.2 Fahrenheit
  • High Fever- 102.4 to 105.8 Fahrenheit
  • Hyperthermia- anything over 105.8 Fahrenheit

This temperature range is different for infants or children. If you have an infant that is 3 months or less that has a temperature above 100.4, they should see a doctor immediately.

If you are an adult and you have a fever above 103 degrees and your body isn’t responding to over-the-counter acetaminophen treatment, then you should see a doctor immediately.

People that are immune comprised are people that have HIV, cancer, auto immune disease, etc. Those individuals want to make sure they minimize ever getting a fever because their ability to fight it off will be greatly diminished because of their respective compromised immune system.

Some of the symptoms that you can experience if you have a fever are:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Chills
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle Aches
  • Headache
  • Rash

The Bottom Line is the best way to reduce a fever is by staying in bed or staying hydrated while drinking lots of water. And by taking over the counter medications to reduce the fever. If the fever doesn’t go away within a week, then you need to contact a doctor immediately.
