What is colon cleansing? A colon cleanse is a procedure used to remove waste and toxins from your colon. A colon cleanse and bowl prep are two different procedures. A bowel prep is used to clean out your colon prior to a colonoscopy or surgery.

A bowel prep is when you take something orally by mouth to induce diarrhea and this is supposed to clean out the colon from the beginning to the end.

How a colon cleanse works is you rest on the table and the colon hygienist sends 60 liters of fluid through a tube into the rectum. The toxins and waste are then expelled through a different tube and then the process is repeated again. You can find an at home cleansing kit at any local drug store.

Some of the risks of colon cleanse is the following:

  • Dehydration– The removal of fluids leads to dehydration which leads to kidney failure.
  • Electrolyte Imbalance– When you do a colon clean it can mess up the electrolytes balance of your potassium and sodium levels. And imbalance of this can lead to a loss of consciousness and kidney damage.
  • Bowel Perforation– Is when a tear occurs in the wall of the lower intestine. This can potentially happen when cleansing and some of the symptoms are fever, pain, chills, nausea, etc. This is considered a medical emergency and potentially can lead to a fatality.
  • Bacterial Imbalance– When you do a colon cleanse there have been incidents of unhealthy bacteria being invited to the lower digestive system with the fluids and instruments used during the cleanse.

Some tips to perform a safe and healthy cleanse is:

  • Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated to make up for the loss of fluids during a cleanse.
  • Make sure that whichever doctor you hire to do this has the appropriate hygiene disinfection methods and procedures to perform this.
  • Talk to your doctor first before you make the decision to have a colon cleanse to see what your complication risks are based on your present health history.

The Bottom Line is colon cleanse is not the most pleasant thing to  do but it helps to remove the waste and toxins from your colon. You want to make sure that if you do this that you contact your doctor to get clarity if there could be any potential complications due to your present health history.
