What causes green stool? Green stool or poop could be caused by the foods you eat, the medications you are taking or a medical condition you have.

Other things that could be causing it could be a bacterial infection, or the antibiotics you are taking or an underlying medical condition. Some of the foods that can cause your stool to be green are eating a lot of green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale, or even possibly dark green powder supplements.

Dyed blue/purple food can cause green stool discoloration. And those foods can be blueberries, red cabbage, grape flavored sodas, purple/blue/ice pops, blue icing, etc.

Other gastric conditions that can cause green stool issues are irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, and overuse of laxatives. If you have chronic green stool and it accompanies severe symptoms such as an upset stomach, blood in your stool, nausea then that means you need to go to a doctor to get yourself checked out.

Also, if you have your gallbladder removed there is no reservoir or place for your bile to store from your liver. And when this is released in the bowels it can cause bile acid diarrhea or green stool.

Green poop doesn’t mean that this is a possible sign of cancer. Typically, with cancer your stool could be black, but you shouldn’t ignore it if your stool is green.

The Bottom Line is green stool can be caused by the green vegetables you eat, antibiotics, medical GI gastric condition you may have such as IBS, (Irritable Bowl Syndrome), ulcerative colitis, overuse of laxatives, etc.
