Is seltzer water bad for you? Seltzer water is water that is infused with carbon dioxide gas under pressure. Seltzer water is considered carbonated water and it is just as good as drinking regular water. According to the CDC, The Center For Disease Control and Prevention.

Carbonated water can have an affect on your teeth. When water is carbonated, it lowers your PH. According to the Journal of American Dental Association which is a study published in December of 2015. Your dental erosion can occur when your teeth are exposed to environments that are less than a PH of 4.0.

If you consume acidic drinks, it can potentially cause your enamel teeth to erode. Enamel erosion can lead to cavities and sensitivities. If you have issues with acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux, then you may want to limit your seltzer water intake. The carbonate problem can make your GERD symptoms worse.

Some research studies have shown that seltzer or sparkling water can improve the swallowing ability in young and older adults. There was one study in 16 healthy people that were asked to swallow different liquids. Carbonated water showed the strongest ability to stimulate the nerves responsible for swallowing.

Several research studies have shown that drinking carbonated water may improve the feelings of being full after meals more so than water. Drinking seltzer or sparkling water may help to have food remain in your stomach longer which heightens fullness.

Research studies have shown that drinking sparkling water can decrease constipation. In fact, a study showed it decreased constipation symptoms by 58%. There is evidence that sparkling water can improve other symptoms of indigestion like stomach pain.

There was a study in 18 postmenopausal women that showed that drinking sodium rich carbonated water decreased LDL bad cholesterol levels, inflammatory marks, and blood sugar. And surprisingly they also experienced an increase in HDL good cholesterol levels.

The Bottom Line there is no evidence that shows that seltzer water is bad for you. Some of the health benefits is it can possibly improve digestion, improve the ability to swallow and reduce constipation.
