Does milk help acid reflux? If you experience acid reflux it could be an allergic reaction to a meal or food. There was a study that was published in 2011 that showed a relationship between cow’s milk and acid reflux.  81 children were enrolled in this study who had signs and symptoms of acid reflux were enrolled in this study.

All the people in this study received a medication called omeprazole to reduce stomach acid for 4 weeks.  But even after that they still experienced symptoms.

Acid Reflux is also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, (gerd) and this affects 20% of the people in the United States according to the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney disease. Some other factors that cause acid reflux are drinking alcohol, smoking, obesity, connective tissue disease and pregnancy.

Here are some medicines that can contribute to acid reflux are:

  • Birth Control
  • Antidepressants
  • Medications for osteoporosis
  • Sedatives for anxiety
  • Beta blockers for high blood pressure and heart disease
  • Anti-inflammatory medications like Aspirin, Advil, Ibuprofen, etc.

Once they eliminated dairy products from their diet their symptoms improved significantly. This is why probiotics are so important when it comes to improving gut health. Probiotics can help aid in gut digestion.

Probiotics can help the following conditions such as:

  • Diarrhea
  • Gastric inflammation
  • Irritable Bowel syndrome
  • Gastrointestinal cancer

Some people can experience severe reactions to dairy like anaphylaxis and those symptoms are:

  • Skin rash and hives
  • Swelling of the lips and tongue and throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Fainting

Being allergic to dairy whether you are an adult or child is common in our society.

Here are some good dairy substitutes for acid relief.

  • Coconut
  • Cashew
  • Rice
  • Flax
  • Hemp
  • Coconut
  • Almond

Here are some suitable dairy substitutes below:

  • Buttermilk
  • Evaporated Milk
  • Heavy cream
  • Condensed Milk
  • Ricotta
  • Parmesan cheese

One of the best ways to see if dairy gives you some form of allergic reaction like acid flux is to document how you feel when you consume dairy in a diary or log. If you feel that any type of cheese or milk gives you acid reflux, then eliminate it from your diet.
