How to improve sleep quality? According, to the U.S Gallop poll less than 40% of American get the recommended sleep per day of 7 to 9 hours of sleep per day. Lack of sleep for many Americans is due to stress, health problems and cognitive issues.

Sixty-seven percent of Americans that are over 65 years old get the most sleep based on Gallop statistics. Surprisingly, Americans got more sleep in the 1940’s. And one of the things is that we are over-stimulated with too much in our society whether it is the internet, social media, iPad, laptop, TV, etc.

How to improve sleep quality?

Those devices make it hard to turn it off and rest. When you always have all those audio and video devices on it makes it exceedingly difficult to sleep because you are overstimulated. And we live in an overstimulated society. And young kids and teenagers are affected by this more so than when I was teenager in the eighties. When I was a kid in the 1980’s the only video device was the TV and there were like 5 to 7 channels, and this was before cable TV.

Here are things you can do to improve your sleep:

  • Stay away from drinking any caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea, or energy drinks before bed.
  • Try not to work out at a gym late at night. Because if you, do you will have problems going to sleep. When you work out at a gym it raises your heart rate, and it takes time for your heart rate to stabilize back to normal. When you exercise it’s like taking a big shot of caffeine.
  • Regular work out activity at a gym will help you sleep better just make sure it is not late at night.
  • Try not to take too many daytime naps. If you take several daytime naps in the day, then obviously that it will affect you going to bed on time or going to sleep. And it can cause unnecessary sleep disorders
  • Create a room or place where you sleep that does not involve a lot of loud noise or a lot of light beaming into your room. If you create a stressless and restful sleep environment, you will sleep better.
  • Go to bed and establish consistent sleep habits at the same time. When you do that, it reinforces your body’s sleep wake up cycle. This is also helps to maintain consistent sleep schedules.
