If you can’t workout for 3 or more months after a major surgery, how are you supposed to lose weight? I have some tips on losing weight after surgery and some simple things to start making positive gains.

In life we are going to experience unexpected things that come our way that can really change our daily lifestyle habits.  Nobody wants to ever have surgery if they can avoid but it happens. And when you do have surgery for an illness or injury it requires taking time off to heal and recover from that procedure. When you’re healing and recovering from any kind of surgery or procedure, you’re typically not given the green light to workout or commence exercise for some time.

Most people typically gain weight during this recovery phase because the doctors have advised them to not workout. If you’re going to be sedentary and can’t move much then the diet and nutrition aspect of your rehabilitation is crucial in helping you not gain weight.

Calories Count

How much you eat and the quality of the food matters. You’ll want to make sure you’re getting highly nutrient food into you digestive system while balancing the amount of calories you’re consuming. Making sure your daily diet or nutrition plan doesn’t exceed 2,000-2,200 calories depends on how much you currently weigh. Fruits and vegetables should be on every major meal you eat such as lunch, dinner, or breakfast. Make sure you have protein and complex carbs with every meal.

High quality complex carbs include brown rice, sweet potatoes, oatmeal, beans, etc.  High-quality healthy fats include avocado, almonds, cashews, peanut butter, etc. Remember that eating a healthy diet plan with an emphasis on losing weight must take into consideration a caloric deficit. A caloric deficit is when the number of calories consumes in day is smaller than the number of calories burned.

Working out after Surgery

So, what type of workout or exercises can you do if your doctors say no to weight-lifting or anything high impact? Swimming may be one of the best low-impact workouts for anybody coming off a major surgery. If you incorporate swimming and eating a tailored low-caloric/high-nutrient dense diet it will help you tremendously in weight management post-surgery. Drinking water is a great appetite suppressant as it makes you fuller and it has zero calories. Fruits and vegetables are also a great appetite suppressant because it is low in calories, high in fiber and high in nutrients.
