Is sepsis contagious? Sepsis isn’t contagious but it is important to understand that it is caused by an infection. Sepsis can occur when you have one of the following infections:

Some of those symptoms of sepsis are fevers, clammy skin, shortness of breath, elevated heart rate, an extreme amount of pain. If this is left untreated you can potentially go into septic shock.
Based off data of the CDC, Center for Disease and Control more than 1.7 million people get sepsis annually in the U.S. One in three people die of sepsis in the hospital.
Some of the stages of sepsis are:
- An infection in the bloodstream that causes inflammation in the body.
- An infection and inflammation that is severe enough to affect organ function.
- Septic shock that can cause a drop in blood pressure, stroke, organ dysfunction, difficulty breathing, abnormal heart beat, dizziness, respiratory or heart failure or death.
The people that are at higher risk of sepsis are young children, seniors, people that are immune compromised, people in ICUs, people that are exposed to invasive devices like catheters and breathing tubes.
Sepsis is typically diagnosed through a blood test and the blood test will be able to determine infection, clotting problems, abnormal liver function, etc.
Some of the medications you can use to treat sepsis is blood pressure medications, IV antibiotics to fight the infection, corticosteroids to fight inflammation, pain medications to help relieve pain.
The Bottom Line is Sepsis is not contagious, but it is a life-threatening illness which is caused by your body’s response to an infection. It is important to understand that bacterial infection that causes sepsis can be spread from person to person.
