Make Your Goals Specific and Attainable

Some examples of specific and attainable goals might include:

  • Eating at least two cups of vegetables each day.
  • Moving your body for at least 20 minutes daily: this could mean going to the gym, increasing your non-exercise activity, walking while talking on the phone, or using an under-desk bike or elliptical.
  • Reducing stress in your life: chronic stress has been linked to weight gain, increased body fat, and poor eating habits.

Choose Relevant Goals

Along with choosing goals that are specific and attainable, they should be relevant for you and your physical, mental, and emotional needs — as well as your values and interests. For instance, you wouldn’t set a goal for running a marathon if you don’t enjoy running. Instead, you would set a goal that aligns with your specific interests. Don’t set a goal just because you think you should: consider your top priorities and choose goals that matter to you.

Create Your Wellness Plan

Once you’ve identified the health and fitness goals you’d like to achieve, you’ll be ready to create your wellness plan and put these plans into action! A good wellness plan takes your physical, mental, emotional, financial, and professional needs into consideration and outlines the steps you’ll need to take to achieve your health and fitness goals.

Take reducing stress at work, for example. If you’re burned out in your career or ready for a change, you’ll want to explore your different options. Depending on your situation, these options could include reducing your work hours, offloading tasks to coworkers, looking for a new job, or going back to school so you can change careers altogether.
