Can Epsom salt relieve constipation? Consuming Epsom salt helps to increase the amount of water in the intestines while softening the stool which makes it easier to pass. Taking Epsom salt has a laxative effect because it increases the amount of water in the intestines while making your stool easier to pass.

Epsom salt is like table salt or sodium chloride which can be found in most drug stores, grocery stores, liquor stores, gas stations, etc. And it is typically found in the laxative or personal care section. Epsom salt is relatively safe for most children over the age of 6 and adults.

The best way to take Epsom salt for constipation is the following:

For adults and children over the age of 12 you would dissolve 2 to 4 teaspoons of Epsom salt in 8 ounces of water. And then drink it immediately.

For children who are at the age of 6 to 11 they would dissolve 1 to 2 teaspoons of Epsom salt in 8 ounces of water and drink it immediately.

It usually takes about 1 to 4 hours for the Epsom salt to take effect. If you don’t get results within 4 hours, then repeat the same dosage again until it takes effect. Try not to do this for more than a week without consulting a medical professional or your doctor.

Some of the side effects to Epsom salt are the following:

  • Nausea
  • Cramping
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloating
  • Gas

Some of the common causes of constipation are low fiber diet, stress, dehydration, no exercising, overuse of laxatives.

What foods help with constipation?

Adding fiber foods to your diet such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, etc. It helps tremendously in preventing constipation.

The Bottom Line is that taking Epsom salt can help relieve constipation. And it can take up to 4 hours to start feeling the effects of the Epsom salt. Eating more fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and drinking more water will also help tremendously with constipation.
