How Much Sodium Per Day?

How much sodium per day?  Most health organizations recommend healthy adults to take less than 2300 mg per day which is about one teaspoon of salt per day. And this recommendation is to prevent high blood pressure and any severe health conditions or chronic issues.

Salt is used in most food processing and manufacturing realms and 75% of total sodium consumed comes from processed foods. It is important to understand that your kidneys help to regulate your sodium levels. 

And you excrete sodium through urine and sweating. There is a lot of research that shows that there is a strong relationship between excessive sodium intake and high blood pressure. That is why it is important that your sodium intake consumption should be at moderate to low levels.

The demographic that seems to be sensitive to sodium in terms of the cause-and-effect of chronic diseases is older adults and African Americans.  And the highest risk to high consumption of blood pressure is heart disease.

The Institute of Medicine, (IOM) recommends that healthy adults should consume 1500 mg of sodium per day. Other organizations recommend that healthy adults should consume 2000 grams of sodium per day. And the American Heart Association advises a much lower intake of 1500 mg of sodium per day.

Unfortunately, Americans consume more sodium than health authorities and organizations advise. And that is why they try to give their health expert advice on what is within the healthy and moderate level range.

Some of the things you can do to help bring down your blood pressure is the following:

Exercise will help to reduce your blood pressure levels through aerobic and anaerobic training. Aerobic training can be swimming, walking, jogging, cycling, dancing, etc. Anerobic training is body weight exercises, dumbbell free weights, machine weights, resistance bands, etc.

If you can eat more fruits and vegetables that can help lower your blood pressure levels because of the magnesium and potassium intake from it.

High sodium consumption is associated with the number of calories you consume. Not only will eating fewer calories promote weight loss but it promotes being able to maintain healthy blood pressure levels.

The Bottom Line is that people should avoid consuming more than 7 grams of sodium daily as it can cause health issues. High sodium consumption can lead to high blood pressure issues, diabetes, and a high risk of heart disease as well as other chronic diseases.
