Do prenatal vitamins make you gain weight?  Prenatal vitamins contain minimal to 0 calories. So, the answer is no, you will not gain weight from taking prenatal vitamins. But you can gain weight if you consume too many calories. A prenatal vitamin is developed and created for woman who are becoming pregnant, near pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Expectant women don’t really take enough nutrients from their regular diet so that is why it is important to take a prenatal vitamin. Also prenatal vitamins help bridge the nutritional gap. And a growing baby in the womb needs the important nutrients to develop properly.

Prenatal vitamins should always contain the following:

  • Calcium– Most prenatal vitamins have between 200 mg and 300 mg of calcium. According to the Mayo clinic pregnant and adult women need 1000 milligrams of calcium daily. A woman needs calcium to help with bone development and keep her bones strong.
  • Folic Acid-The American college of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend that pregnant women take in 600 milligrams from all sources whether it be from food or vitamins. Some foods that have folic acids are beans, leafy green vegetables, asparagus, broccoli, etc. And the fortified foods that have it are cereal, bread, pasta, etc.
  • Iron– According to the Mayo Clinic pregnant women need 27 mg of iron per day. And that is 8 mg more than a woman that isn’t pregnant.

Some of the other minerals that prenatal vitamins contain is:

  • Copper
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E

Before taking prenatal vitamins, you should speak with your doctor. Doctors advise women to take prenatal vitamins while they are breastfeeding and while they are trying to get pregnant. And as well after pregnancy to help with lactating women.

Prenatal vitamins are mainly for the needs of pregnant and breastfeeding women.
