What are the benefits of L-Glutamine? L-Glutamine, which is also referred to as glutamine, is an amino acid and it serves as a purpose to build blocks for proteins.  It is found in food and supplements and glutamine is referred to as L-glutamine in most supplements facts labels. L-glutamine can be produced naturally in the body, and it is the most abundant amino acid in the blood.

Glutamine is an important molecule when it comes to intestinal health and immune health. The largest amount of glutamine is found in animal protein because of its high protein content.

This is the percentage of protein that is made up of L-glutamine in each food.

  • Eggs- 4.4%
  • Beef- 4.8%
  • Tofu- 9.1%
  • Skim Milk- 8.1%
  • White Rice- 11.1%
  • Corn- 16.2%

If you choose to obtain glutamine from your diet if you focus on getting your protein from food, then you will increase your glutamine intake.

Research studies have shown that glutamine can help improve health, decrease infections and lead to shorter hospital stays after any surgery procedure. It’s been shown to improve survival and reduce medical costs in severely sick patients.

Other studies have shown that glutamine can improve immune function in animals that are infected with bacteria or viruses. Glutamine provides a great energy source for your intestinal and immune cells.  It prevents bacteria and toxins from moving from your intestines to the rest of your body. It maintains a barrier between the inside of intestines and the rest of your body. And it helps to protect against a leaky gut.

Some glutamine supplements will market themselves so that you can build muscle and strength from it. But research studies have shown that muscle gain and muscle strength is not possible from glutamine supplements.

There was a study where 31 people took glutamine or a placebo for 6 weeks while weight training. The end of the study showed that both groups improved muscle and strength. But there was no difference in muscle and strength between the glutamine group and non-glutamine group.

There is research that has shown that glutamine supplementation can decrease muscle soreness and improve recovery after intense exercise.
