How many sodas can kill you? There was a study published in 2019 in the journal circulation that consuming a 12-ounce sweetened beverage raised the risk of death by 7%.  That study also revealed a 5% increased risk for cancer death. And also, a 10% increased risk for death by cardiovascular disease. This study followed over 118,000 men and women for 30 years. Sweetened beverages include soft drinks, lemonade, and other sugary fruit drinks.

Research studies have revealed that sugary drinks lead to weight gain. And that weight gain increases the risk of chronic health issues such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other types of cancers. There is also some research in the Jama Internal Medicine in 2019 that showed that just drinking two glasses per day of sweetened drinks with artificial sweeteners raises the risk of premature death by 17%.

If you are going to drink sweetened regular soda it is better to do it once a month or less. One can of coca cola contains 39 grams of added sugar. And that is above the American Heart Association well recommended daily consumption of 25 grams of sugar for women and 36 grams of sugar for men.

Another study that was done in 2012 published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that men that drank one soda a day put them at a higher risk of two cancers. And those cancers were multiple myeloma and non-hodgkin lymphoma.

A study published in the British Medical Journal in 2019 found that sugary soft drinks and 100 percent fruit juice can raise the risk of cancer. The best beverage replacements for sodas and sweetened beverages are water, low fat milk, unsweetened coffee, and tea.

According to the CDC drinking a lot of sweetened sugary beverages and soda can lead to:

  • Weight Gain
  • Obesity
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Kidney Disease
  • Gout

The main reason why soda is not good for your health according to the CDC is because of the high sugar content. There was a research study done in 2019 that showed that drinking regular calorie soda and low-calorie soda is bad for your tooth enamel.

The research studies found that those sweeteners had adverse effects to your tooth enamel. The added extra sugar in soda is what can cause you so many unnecessary health issues. That is why moderation is important when consuming soda or sweetened beverages.

The Bottom Line is drinking sodas and sweetened beverages is very unhealthy and it will raise the risk of you obtaining so many chronic diseases. Drinking water and milk is a more suitable beverage replacement.
