The best way to determine if there is any caffeine in any root beer you drink is to check the back of labels. Or go to the website of that particular root beer to see their exact ingredients.

If you compare Barq’s root beer to other brands from a caffeine perspective, you will be surprised how minimal the amount of caffeine compared to others.

Why is it called Root Beer?

It appeared in the mid 1800’s and the drink were inspired by two original ingredients and that was licorice root and sarsaparilla root. Charles Elmer Hires created the first commercial brand of the drink called Hires Root Beer.

Originally Charles wanted to call it Root Tea but thought against that and named it root beer since it is a non-alcoholic drink. He felt the name Root beer would appeal to coal miners.

A lot of people do not know this but by law the FDA does not require brands to put the exact amount of caffeine on the label. Especially if caffeine occurs naturally in the ingredients. The FDA does not require manufacturers to put the exact amount of caffeine on the label.

That is why it is best to check in with manufacturers of the brand and find out how much caffeine is really in the root beer bottle or brand.

One of the things to watch out for ingredients in Root Beer is sugar. Root Beer has a high amount of sugar compared to other brands. It has an excessive high amount of sugar because they sweeten it with corn syrup that is high in fructose.

A 12 ounce of Root beer contains about 46 grams of sugar while coca cola contains about 41 grams of sugar. And Pepsi contains about 39 grams of sugar. The daily recommended allowance of sugar per day is about 26 to 36 grams of sugar daily. So, drinking just one cup of Root Beer exceeds that healthy daily amount of sugar.

Root Beer also contains a high number of calories. Root Beer contains about 290 calories in one can. But diet Root Beer contains about zero to 1 calorie.

The Bottom Line is most Root Beer is caffeine free. But the Barq root beer is one of the rare root beer brands that has caffeine. Also root beer has a high amount of sugar which is unhealthy. And it can lead to so many different diseases if you consume a high amount of sugar for many years. Drinking Root Beer regularly is not healthy at all, so it is best if you do drink Root Beer to do it within moderation.
