What are some home remedies to cure dry cough? A dry cough is a cough that produces no mucus. And a wet cough is a cough that produces mucus in the lungs. Here are some home remedies that can help a dry cough it is important to know that some of this anecdotal evidence.

  • A humidifier adds moisture to the air and can help improve your breathing and loosen any mucus you may have.
  • Honey can help reduce inflammation in the throat and help soothe a sore throat and break down mucus. In 2018 there was a review study on honey that it was as effective as one of the main ingredients in Benadryl which would be diphenhydramine.
  • Salt Water. There was a 2019 study that said if you gargled salt water three times a day you can reduce a cough by 2 ½ days. It also has reduced sneezing and a stuffed-up nose.
  • Drinking Water. Drinking plenty of fluids like water will help hydrate your throat and keep it moist. And you should drink about 6 to 8 glasses of water per day. Room temperature warm water may be better than icy water to help heal the throat and keep you warm.
  • Diet. A dry cough can be the result of an allergic reaction to foods. And those foods can be histamine foods such as chocolate, strawberries, alcohol, expired cheese, smoked meat. Or any type of spicy foods that can cause acid reflux.
  • Environment. Common things in the environments that can be counterproductive to a cough are smoke, perfumes, pollen, and cleaning products. It is best to make sure you stay away from these types of environmental things when you are trying to recover from a cough. Some of things that can improve the environment are an air purifier, cool mist humidifier and eliminating smoke from the area.
  • Herbs. Herbs have tremendous anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to help boost your immune system. And increase and reduce the swelling in your throat. Those herbs can be garlic, ginger, turmeric, thyme, capsaicin, and marshmallow root.

Common Causes For Dry Cough

  • Postnasal drip is the symptom of a common cold where mucus drips down the back of the throat and causes the cough reflex.
  • Having asthma can activate a dry cough because it causes the airway to swell and narrow.
  • Ace inhibitor prescription medications such as Vasotec, Prinivil and Zestril has been known to cause dry cough in about 20% in people.
  • A dry cough can be the result of a virus that you have or serious conditions like lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis, etc.
